Setting up Invision Power Board

Invision Power Board (IPB) is a professional forum system that has been built from the ground up with speed and security in mind, taking advantage of object oriented code, highly-optimized SQL queries, and the fast PHP engine. A comprehensive administration control panel is included to help you keep your board running smoothly. Moderators will also enjoy the full range of options available to them via built-in tools and moderators control panel. Members will appreciate the ability to subscribe to topics, send private messages, and perform a host of other options through the user control panel.

This tutorial will guide you through the Invision Power Board setup and installation process on our servers. It is assumed that your account has support for PHP and MySQL database and that you have already created your database.

Part A - Downloading the Script

The script can be downloaded from the Invision Power Board website at http://www.invisionboard.com/download.cgi?subc=trial.

The file that you will download is saved in .zip format; this is a compressed bundle containing the files in the Invision Power Board distribution. Unpack this archive in a temporary directory on your computer using a decompression software.

Part B - Uploading Files to Server

Start your FTP software and after connecting to your web server and create a new folder on your server named /forum in the /var/www/html/ folder for your Invision Power Board files.

In your unpacked Invision Power Board files you will find a folder called /upload. Upload the entire contents of the /upload folder to your /forum folder on your server.

In your /forum folder on your server, set the file permissions of the folders /archive_in, /archive_out and /uploads to 7-5-5 or:

  • Owner: Allow Read, Write, and Execute
  • Group: Allow Read and Execute
  • Others: Allow Read and Execute

To change file permissions using CuteFTP, select the folder by clicking on it once on the remote system side and then right-click on the file to bring up the option menu and select CHMOD.

In your /forum folder on your server, set the file permissions of the conf_global.php to 6-6-6 or:

  • Owner: Allow Read and Write
  • Group: Allow Read and Write
  • Others: Allow Read and Write
