FAQ > Domain Name >
Q: What is a domain name? Do I really need one?
  • Each Web site has a unique IP (Internet Protocol) address, which distinguishes it from every other site on the internet. An IP address consists of four groups of digits that can range from 0-254, separated by dots (for example, 209.53.186.6).

A domain name, on the other hand, consists of a group of characters in the form yourdomain.ext, where yourdomain is a unique combination of alphanumeric characters (a-z, 0-9) or the hyphen, and .ext is a valid extension such as .com, .net, or .org (for example, Dollarhost.com).

Although sites can be accessed either by IP address or a domain name, it is typically much easier to remember a domain name such as Dollarhost.com than an IP address like 209.53.186.6.
